What is Protein?

Protein is a nutrient found in food (meats, milks, eggs, beans) that is an important part of the human diet. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues such as muscles, bones, cartilage, skin, and blood.

Why Protein ‘Powder’?

Convenience! Protein powder is the easiest way to consume a nutrient that is normally reserved for meals that take a lot of time to cook and prepare. No need to turn on the oven, fire up the stove or deal with any messy cleanup. Protein powders are absorbed by the body very quickly making them an extremely efficient source of nutrients.

What Go Good protein powder is best for me?

Our website has some great health and fitness filters as well as information on the specific product pages and blog but if you are still unsure what’s best for you feel free to contact us direct at hello@gogood.co.nz and we will get in touch with one of our nutritional experts to find what’s right for you.

What is ‘Whey’ and why is it so common?

Protein powders come from many sources - cows, peas, soy, eggs and hemp seeds. Whey refers to protein sourced from cow’s milk. The reason why whey is so common and desirable is that it’s much more effective than other sources. The body absorbs and digests whey very quickly allowing its nutrients to replenish our bodies almost instantly while other sources can take a little bit longer.

Is whey protein concentrate or whey protein isolate best?

Whey isolate goes through an extra filtration process which basically removes all of the fat and lactose leaving an almost pure protein source. Think of it like having meat without the fat (isolate) and with the fat (concentrate) OR a salad without dressing (isolate) and with dressing (concentrate).

So there is no real ‘best’ answer rather it's a personal preference depending on your goals. As you know fats are very good for you – especially those found in milk. Typically the general consensus is:

  • Whey Protein Concentrate – Great all round everyday protein source with amazing BCAA profile. Cost-effective and versatile.
  • Whey Protein Isolate – Extremely high protein profile and used with a purpose in mind. On the expensive side and usually reserved for those with specific dietary goals and requirements.

New Zealand whey protein – what’s the difference?

Hormones - Unlike other dairy producers the New Zealand industry has banned the use of growth hormones on cows. Specifically Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) which is injected into cows to increase milk production.

Diet - New Zealand dairy cows maintain a natural diet grazing on lush chemical-free grass pastures. Cows in USA & Brazil are usually raised on un-natural corn or soy-based diets and injected with antibiotics to survive unsanitary conditions.

Processing - New Zealand processing facilities and techniques are world leading ensuring the maximum benefits are preserved in the final whey product during the filtration process.

The combination of these factors results in New Zealand having a reputation for the highest quality dairy (and therefore whey protein powder) in the world.

Is Go Good whey protein pasteurised?

Yes. It is illegal in New Zealand for milk products not to be pasteurised. Pasteurisation is a process of heating the milk to 72°C and holding it at this temperature for 15 seconds. The aim of pasteurisation is to remove harmful bacteria that may be present in the rawest form of milk without affecting the nutritional characteristics of the milk. Here in New Zealand, we have some of the most technically advanced processes to ensure this.

Is Go Good whey high or low temperature pasteurised?

Low temperature. The pasteurisation process for our whey follows New Zealand and industry standards of 72°C. For comparison sake, high-temperature pasteurisation is between 120°C – 135°C which is usually reserved for long life milk products

What is the recommended serving size and frequency?

We’ve made things simple - our complete protein powder and smoothie booster ranges come with a 30-gram scoop which is equal to one serving size. Our protein sachets are 30 grams equal to one serving size. No guesswork needed!

Frequency is entirely situation dependent. If you exercise regularly like us then two serves per day are sufficient. One during the day as preferred and another directly after training or exercise. We typically have one with our breakfast smoothie and one post workout. One serve on recovery days is fine.
